“Am-ma,”meaning push-pull, is the oldest Chinese word to describe massage. Amma massage therapy, like many massage therapies in TCM (Traditional Chinese medicine), is based on the principles of qi (life force energy) that flows through the body. By combining a variety of massage techniques, including Swedish massage therapy, Shiatsu, and reflexology, practitioners of Amma massage therapy are enable the free flow of qi through the body. The goal of Amma massage is to balance the body’s qi, promoting a feeling of good health and also addressing specific medical conditions which may be troubling the client. Unlike most schools of Western massage, Amma massage also includes nutritional advice, herbal therapies, and other suggestions for improving the client’s general health.
